Procedures for Student Workers and Evening/Weekend Supervisors

3. Check Out Items with No Barcode (Single Journals, Bound Journals, Magazines)

This Process is limited to Holy Cross Faculty only.

  • If an item has a barcode, try to follow the "Check Out a Book" steps. If the barcode registers, follow the steps for Check Out a Book.
  • If the barcode does NOT register, follow these steps. (This is the same process as System Down Procedure).

1. In the drawer on the right side of the Circulation Desk, take out the manila folder labeled System Down Check Out Sheets.

2. Use the most recent paper from the top of the pile to fill out the information.

3. Under Patron Name/Institution, write the patron's first and last name.

4. Under Book Title, write down the title of the journal or magazine.

5. Under Call Number, write down the call number of the journal.

a. If it is a magazine, write down the issue number (usually in small print on the spine or the top of the magazine. International magazines may look like No. 1234).

6. Under Barcode Number, if the item has a barcode, write it down.

a. Write the check out date in this column.

b. If there is no barcode, just write the check out date.

c. When the item returns, write the returned date and cross out the entire column.

7. When the sheet is full, place it on the bottom of the pile and start a new one. Keep the sheets on top if there is still an item checked out, even if the sheet is full.

8. Return the folder to the drawer.
