Library of Congress Classification System:
Dinand Library books are arranged by the Library of Congress System (LC). Library of Congress Classification System arranges books according to subject. Once you know the LC classification System for your subject you can easily browse through a section on a particular subject. LC Classification System charts are located on the Main floor, and inside the doorway of the Mezzanine Level and the Basement level.
1. To find a specific book you will need that book’s call number.
A call number may look like this: BP43 .I5 Q25 2005
· The first part of a call number consists of one, two, or three letters and are shelved alphabetically.
· The second part of a call number is a whole number and shelved as a whole number.
· The third or occasionally a fourth part of a call number is a letter followed by numbers.
· The numbers in the third or fourth part of call number are always considered a decimal point. The decimal point may be visible as part of the call number or it may not but it shelved as a decimal.
· A fifth line may indicate year of publication, volume number or other information about the book.
2. How Do I find a Call Number?
· Ask any Librarian for help. We are always happy to answer your questions.
· Find your call number while searching the Holy Cross Library online catalog
· Stack map are available on the Main Floor and both Mezzanine and Basement floors to find a particular section.
