Guide to: Open Access

What is CrossWorks?

CrossWorks is the institutional repository of the College of the Holy Cross. It is used to

  • Collect, preserve and provide open access to the intellectual and creative work of the Holy Cross Community
  • Provide access to some of the unique materials in the College Archives and Distinctive Collections
  • Increase visibility of scholarship and creative works
  • Showcase departments, programs and student research

CrossWorks is an online space.  Here's the link:  http://crossworks.holycross.edu

CrossWorks is an open access platform of the Holy Cross Libraries.  That means you don't have to pay to view or download items.

What Content is Eligible for CrossWorks?

  • Contributors may include non-affiliated scholars if they are co-authoring with Holy Cross authors or are affiliated closely with the College, e.g., professor emeritus
  • There is no formal limit to file size or amount of material.
  • Most file formats are acceptable.
  • Some material may be available only to the Holy Cross community.

How to Submit

What you do:

1.  Review and complete the CrossWorks Submission Agreement.  If you have any questions, contact crossworks@holycross.edu.

2.  Provide the digital file of the work.

3.   Create a Digital Commons account (optional).  This provides you with access to an Author Dashboard where you can review download and readership information.

  • This step is not required, but it provides you with more flexibility and control over reviewing  your download information
  • If you do not create a Digital Commons account, you will receive monthly download reports at the email address you provide.

What we do for you:

1. Upload material to CrossWorks.  We use the bepress Digital Commons submission form  to create the metadata and citation for each work.  Access is provided in the form of a downloadable PDF file.

  • Once your work is posted, you will receive an email containing a permanent and stable link to the item.

Please Note:

  • Permission for images, charts, and other materials incorporated into the paper are the responsibility of the author.
  • Compliance with the IRB is the responsibility of the author.

Pre-, Post and Publisher Prints

Depositing your article in CrossWorks BEFORE it is published is the easiest way to make your work available to the widest audience possible.  This is the archiving method that most publishers prefer, as the majority will not allow you to include a final published article in an institutional repository.

What is a preprint?

preprint is the original version of your article that you wrote and submitted to the journal.

Other terms: Author's Original Manuscript (AOM), Author's Original (AO), Submitted Version

What is a postprint?

postprint is a version of your article after peer-review but before the final publisher formatting. It should NOT look like the final version. It is typically a Word document.

Other terms: Accepted Manuscript, Author's Accepted Manuscript, AM

What is a pub PDF?

publisher PDF is the final, published version of your article with all of the publisher formatting. It will likely contain headers, footers, page numbers, typesetting, etc.

Other terms: Version of Record (VoR), Published Version, Published Article, Final Version, Final Published Version

Journal Hosting with CrossWorks

If you have a journal currently hosted elsewhere that you would like to move, are thinking about starting a new journal, or are a faculty advisor to a student-run publication, CrossWorks can help!

Serving as the host for your journal means that we provide you with a free, stable and permanent web-space, and any technical support you may need.  Hosting your journal through this platform (bepress Digital Commons) also gives you access to tools and features that can assist you with author submissions, and the peer review process.

  • The journal will be it's own self-contained space, where links for “about us,” “contact us,” “submissions,” etc., will only pertain to your journal.

  • As a self-contained publication, this also means that your journal does not have to adhere to the layout or color scheme of CrossWorks.

  • If you are creating a new journal, graphic designers at bepress can help you create original journal web presence that will suit your publication.

  • If you want to host an existing journal, graphic designers can also help to keep continuity in the look feel of your journal by incorporating any branding/logos/color schemes that you already established.

If you are interested in hosting a journal through CrossWorks, email crossworks@holycross.edu. The Digital Initiatives Archivist will provide you with a Journal Set-Up Form, and contact our bepress administrator to start the process.
