BIOL 213: Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy (Crofts): Citing Sources

In-Text Citations: Journal of Experimental Biology

Reference List: Journal of Experimental Biology

Journal Title Abbreviations

Often in citations, you will see journal titles abbreviated.  This can make it diffcult to determine what journal the article was published in.  Often you can type the abbreviation into Google to find the full title of the journal.  If that does not work, use the following tools to decipher the full title of the journal:

RefWorks

RefWorks is a service called a citation manager.  It is designed to allow you to collect and organize references for all of your research, and then to compile those references into bibliographies. You can use RefWorks to import references from Holy Cross databases, or to input your own.  RefWorks is a product to which the College subscribes, so it is higher-quality and has more tools than most of the 'free' citation programs you will find on the web.
Unlike most of our databases, you can continue to use and access RefWorks even after you graduate!

For help using RefWorks, check out the guides linked below:

Zotero Tools:

There are two "pieces" to Zotero that you can install: the Connector (a browser extension which can be installed in your version of Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox or Safari), and the Desktop Program. To effectively utilize Zotero, you will want both, and especially the Desktop Program!

with web connector

  • Export PDFs, web pages, and library catalog records to your Zotero library from your browser (you must be on the PDF, not the description page in CrossSearch etc.) web connector only
  • Add articles to your Zotero library by "identifier" (i.e., look them up by DOI).
  • Manually add records to your Zotero library.
  • Add notes and attachments to citations in your library
  • Generate in-text citations/footnotes and bibliographies
  • Create notes files
  • Create and share group libraries
  • Organize your Zotero library in folders and collections

with desktop program

All of the above (except as marked), plus....

  • Drag and drop a PDF into your library; Zotero will identify it automatically
  • Import RIS files from databases (and select other sources, such as Google Scholar)
