Cross Search

Use CrossSearch to explore for books and articles related to your topic.
To search for only books, click the "Catalog Only" button in the left menu of the results page.

CrossSearch: books and ebooks

Search for books by either Keywords or Subject Headings. Start with a Keyword search and identify some relevant books. Then look at the subject headings for those books (live links in the catalog record).

Once you find one book you like, take note of the call number and look around on the shelves in that area - you'll be in the right section for your topic

Suggested Subject Headings:

Asia, Central -- Social conditions.
Asia -- Religion.
Southeast Asia -- Economic conditions.
Southeast Asia -- History.

Example with the search "asia and atlas":
A Historical atlas of South Asia / edited by Joseph E. Schwartzberg ; with the collaboration of Shiva G. Bajpai ... [et al.] ; final map drafts by the American Geographical Society of New York; principal sponsors, Charles Lesley Ames ... [et al.].

Locating books

Books at Holy Cross Libraries are arranged by Library of Congress Call Number.

At Dinand, call numbers A through G are on the upper (Mezzanine) level. Call numbers H through Z are on the lower (Ground) level, with a few exceptions. Call numbers beginning with "M" are located in the Music Library and “Q, R, S, T” are in the Science Library.

For research in Asian Studies, you may find relevant titles in several different call number ranges. For example, you will find many books in the D, E and F sections as many history books are classified under call numbers starting with D (history of Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia). Each letter of the call number system is further divided into subclasses. For example, many books on the history of Asia are in the DS section. You may also find relevant titles in the B section (Philosophy & Religion), N section (Arts), or P section (Languages & Literatures), among others.

For more information about Library of Congress Classification, see the Library of Congress' Classification Outline and check out this tutorial.
