Database Guides: EconLit

A guide for using the EconLit database.

EconLit

Produced by the American Economic Association, EconLit provides links to full-text articles in all fields of economics. Coverage includes journal articles, books, collective volume articles, dissertations, working papers, and full-text book reviews from the Journal of Economic Literature.

Journal indexed in EconLit include:
  • African Journal of Economic and Sustainable Development
  • Agricultural Economics Review
  • Applied Economics Letters
  • Econometrica
  • Journal of Economic Literature
  • Quarterly Journal of Economics

Why use EconLit?

There are several advantages to using EconLit for research in economics instead of CrossSearch, the general search tool available on the homepage of the Holy Cross Libraries:

  • CrossSearch is a great starting place, but it does not search all databases that Holy Cross has access to. Since most research in economics is published in journal articles rather than in books, EconLit has access to the top journals (see a ranking of journals here) that CrossSearch does not cover in its searches.
  • CrossSearch is not subject-specific, so it will return results in multiple disciplines. For example, the top results in CrossSearch for "discrimination" are more general overviews of discrimination from a sociological viewpoint, whereas the top results in EconLit are empirical studies of discrimination in different settings, which is more useful for a paper in economics.
