To search for books held by the Holy Cross Libraries, you can use: 

 

To search for books in CrossSearch, enter your search terms. Then, on the results, page, choose the Catalog option to limit to books and other materials traditionally found in the library catalog:


When you don't have a particular title of a book in mind, begin by searching for a key term about your research topic.Then look at the subject headings for the books in your search results. You can follow the subject heading links in the record for each book to find similar books, or you can use the terms in the subject headings to revise your search strategies.

Examples of Subject Headings:


Books at Dinand Library are arranged by Library of Congress Call Number.

  • Reference books are in the Main Reading Room.
  • Call numbers A through G are on the upper (Mezzanine) level.
  • Call numbers H through Z are on the lower (Ground) level (with a few exceptions).
  • Oversize books (with a "+" in the call number) are shelved at the end of the normal section for that letter.

Unlike articles, there is no convenient checkbox to search the catalog for scholarly books only! To find scholarly books, you will need to make judgment calls about the books you find in the catalog based on information like author, publisher, length and general tone. Sometimes you may need to view the book in person. 

One way to locate scholarly books on your topic is to use a general database like JSTOR or another search tool like CrossSearch to locate book reviews published in academic journals. While book reviews are not scholarly themselves, they often review books which are in fact scholarly works.
