This spring, the Worcester ARC libraries are collaborating to bring our communities a series of events focused on sustainability and climate change. All events are free and open to all members of the Worcester ARC community.

Mobility Justice and Mobile Networked Creativity: Collectively Shaping New Scholarly Fields

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Salisbury Labs 105

A conversation between two prolific and progressive scholars: Mimi Sheller, Dean of The Global School at WPI, and Professor Adriana de Souza e Silva, Communication Studies Professor and Director of the Center for Communication, Media Innovation, and Social Change at the College of Arts, Media and Design at Northeastern University.

Sheller and de Souza e Silva will share their experiences as scholars shaping the emerging fields of mobilities and Mobile Networked Creativity, both as editors and as authors of numerous works of global, multi-faceted scholarship.

Their most recent works include: 

  • “Mobile commoning, subversive mobilities, wayward undercommons,” in the Routledge Handbook of Architecture, Urban Space, and Politics Vol. II (November 2024)
  • “Afterward” in Confronting Climate Coloniality: Decolonizing Pathways for Climate Justice (Routledge, 2024)
  • “Framing Location-based Micromobility as Mobility Justice in Networked Urban Spaces,” in The Routledge Companion to Mobile Media 2.0 (2025).

Local Experts, Global Issues: A Sustainability Conversation with Worcester Area Researchers

Clark University, Goddard Library - Fuller Room

Local experts from Worcester-area colleges and universities will discuss their research on sustainability in their varied areas of expertise.

  • Dr. Mauri Pelto, Professor of Environmental Science, Nichols College, will speak on Climate Change and the Sustainability of Glaciers

  • Dr. Donna Bartlett, Professor of Pharmacy Practice, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, will speak on Deprescribing Medications: Benefits for Health and Climate

  • Dr. Minka Stoyanova, Assistant Teaching Professor, Becker School of Design and Technology, Clark University, will speak on Sustainable Art & Sustainability in Urban Media Installations using Smart Materials 

Light refreshments will be served. Visitor Parking is available in the Downing Street parking garage.

Climate and Weather in Artworks from the Worcester Art Museum

From baking bread to global trade, and from ice skating to herding sheep, discover some of the surprising ways in which climate and weather can shape our understanding of daily life activities depicted in 17th and 18th-century European artworks! This tour will focus on Dutch and British art created during the height of the Little Ice Age.

The tour will be given by: Olivia Stone, Assistant Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photography

Found Creations: A Studio Art Class

Artists across time have had an intrinsic relationship with their environments and would often recycle materials and source tools and media from unexpected places. Inspired by artwork throughout the Museum,  reflect on your own relationship with your surroundings and create a recycled artwork with the guidance of WAM’s professional artist faculty.
