1936: Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on December 17, as Jorge Mario Bergoglio. - 1958: Entered novitiate of the Society of Jesus on March 11.
- 1960: Took initial vows.
- 1961: Began study of Philosophy at San Miguel Seminary, Buenos Aires.
- 1964-1966: Taught high school in Santa Fe and Buenos Aires.
- 1967-1970: Studied Theology at San Miguel Seminary, Buenos Aires.
- 1969: Ordained to priesthood on December 13.
- 1973: Made final profession to the Jesuit order on April 22.
- 1973-1979: Appointed superior of Jesuit province of Argentina and Uruguay.
- 1979-1985: Served as rector of Colegio Maximo and theology teacher.
- 1986: Completed doctoral thesis in Germany.
- 1992: Ordained as Bishop of Auca and Auxiliary of Buenos Aires.
- 1997: Became Coadjustor Archbishop of Buenos Aires
- 1998: Elevated to Archbishop, Primate of Argentina, and Ordinary for Eastern-rite in Argentina.
- 2001: Created Cardinal by Pope John Paul II on February 21.
- 2005-2011: Served as President of the Argentine Bishops' Conference.
- 2013: Elected first Pope from the Americas, and first Jesuit, on March 13; took name Francis.
