  • 1936: Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on December 17, as Jorge Mario Bergoglio
  • 1958: Entered novitiate of the Society of Jesus on March 11. 
  • 1960: Took initial vows.
  • 1961: Began study of Philosophy at San Miguel Seminary, Buenos Aires. 
  • 1964-1966: Taught high school in Santa Fe and Buenos Aires.
  • 1967-1970: Studied Theology at San Miguel Seminary, Buenos Aires.
  • 1969: Ordained to priesthood on December 13.
  • 1973: Made final profession to the Jesuit order on April 22. 
  • 1973-1979: Appointed superior of Jesuit province of Argentina and Uruguay. 
  • 1979-1985: Served as rector of  Colegio Maximo and theology teacher. 
  • 1986: Completed doctoral thesis in Germany. 
  • 1992: Ordained as Bishop of Auca and Auxiliary of Buenos Aires. 
  • 1997: Became Coadjustor Archbishop of Buenos Aires
  • 1998: Elevated to Archbishop, Primate of Argentina, and Ordinary for Eastern-rite in Argentina.
  • 2001: Created Cardinal by Pope John Paul II on February 21. 
  • 2005-2011: Served as President of the Argentine Bishops' Conference.
  • 2013: Elected first Pope from the Americas, and first Jesuit,  on March 13; took name Francis. 
  • 2015: Encyclical: Laudato si'
  • 2016: Apostolic Exhortation: Amoris Laetitia 
  • 2018: Apostolic Exhortation: Gaudete et Exsultate
  • 2019: Apostolic Exhortation: Christus Vivit
  • 2020:
