Rethinking the Afropolitan: The Ethics of Black Atlantic Masculinities on Display —
Organized by Professors Rosa Carrasquillo and Lorelle Semley, this conference explores the finely-fashioned Congolese men known as "sapeurs" — who belong to the Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People — and how our perceptions of them raise new ethical questions about how we read race, gender, and identity in images and texts. Coinciding with the conference is a two-artist exhibit in the Cantor Gallery featuring images of sapeurs by Hector Mediavilla and a commission by Christopher Lopez that interprets the lyrics of an Ismael Rivera song in photos.
